I've heard the song "dear god" by XTC a couple times lately. I used to think it was kind of cool, someone exercising the ability to ask all the tough questions and get up in God's face about things they don't understand. Now I really don't like it at all. I still understand the concept, and I definitely respect the questioning process, but this song seems to be more willful ignorance and even blatant anti-God propaganda than anything else.
Why are you talking to someone you don't believe in? is usually my first frustration.
And wouldn't it occur to you to lay at least a little of the blame for all the world's troubles on some of your fellow humans? Yeah, you'd have a reason to be pissed at a God who is cruelly pulling the strings and making all these terrible things happen, but it really aleviates all personal responsibility, doesn't it? Not to mention it taking away any possibility of free will on the planet. That would be an issue for most people, especially those that don't believe in God.
The thing that gets me the most tho, is that there's a kid that sings the beginning and the end of the song, and does a very good job of expressing the proper emotions to fit the song. That bugs me because I have yet to find a child that has lost the wonder of looking at our world through young eyes, unless it's taken away from them. Any kid that goes to church at all, or is brought up believing in God is usually taught about Jesus being kind and loving and all that, which enhances his view of the world. God made the world to be full of wonders, and kids see that better than any adult. To have that taken away outside of living life and finding all the dirty parts on your own is such a tragedy. And what did Jesus say about leading one of his precious children astray? Hope someone doesn't mind a millstone around their neck.
This is a rant, nothing more. I just heard it again and wanted to let out the frustration.

they sang it at the Rock awhile back, I think for Mark's series about asking the tough questions. Drive 105 will play it every now and then.
I agree....especially the part about "why are you talking to someone you don't believe in?!?" But as an artist, he has a right to say what he wants, just as we as Christians have the right to say what we want. We just don't make millions doing it LOL! Andy Partridge of XTC also has another song where he says he wants 'to worship at the Church of Women.' It's more of a humorous song though! I'm enjoying your blog, some of it sounds like I could have written it :) And you're NOT old! You're 26??? FAR from old!!!
