christine and i have the best idea ever. Every Wednesday for lunch we're going to meet in the cafeteria and spend our lunch hour playing Skip-Bo! How great will that be? If today is any indication of the wisdom of this decision, we're in for many good times.
Well, things didn't actually start out that great since I ended up taking a semi-catastrophic call at 11:55, right when I should have been walking toward the cafeteria. It wasn't awful, just detailed, about a lawsuit, and information from the last 4 years that may or may not be easy to get ahold of and sort through. But it took me an extra 1/2 hour to get everything to where it needed to be. OOPS! That's it, I'm never answering my phone again that close to lunch, too risky!
But things quickly escalated to greatness when I found Christine in the lunchroom and she had an early b-day present for me!! Too sweet. Literally, it was 2 halves of cinnamon rolls that apparently were free in her office or something. Still, it's the thought that counts.
So we launch into Skip-Bo (that's really hard to type quickly) after a quick refresher for yours truly (I think I've played it maybe twice before?) we got going. I made lots of mistakes, Christine totally outplayed me, and won quite readily. And thus declared her love of Skip-Bo and winning.
While we were involved in our game, we started discussing life, and sports, of course. She asked if I was cheering for Detroit (I presume it was from my comment on Kevin's blog). I admitted that I was, and that I was really against the Cardinals who had won last night (I thought it was a best of 5 series and they were headed for the Series, but I guess it's best of 7, they're not in yet!). I explained that I haven't liked the Cardinals since the Twins beat them in the '87 World Series, and I like Detroit because they're the underdogs, they really have stunk up until this year. I would have been for them more throughout the year if they hadn't been so vexing to the Twins.
During this conversation, and lunch in general, there were 2 gentlemen sitting at a table not more than 3-4 feet away from ours, engrossed in discussion of various topics. While we started a quick second game of Skip-Bo and there was a lull in the coversation, we happened to overhear the two guys at the other table start to talk sports. The one guy who's left side was to me basically started repeating everything I said about the Detroit Tigers, he's disliked the Cards ever since '87, Detroit is in our conference, cheer for the conference (another of my points, but unspoken today) they really stank it up until just this year, etc. etc. Christine and I looked at each other in unbelief and she said ever so softly "oh, you have to blog about this..." It was a little on the surreal side. I can't believe that they wouldn't have heard us at all, we were sitting so close! And I don't think he was making fun or anything, because it was an earnest type of conversation between them. I can understand if he either didn't want to refer to our overheard conversation or break into our conversation in the first place because both would imply his eavesdropping. It was still weird tho.
And then I won the 2nd game of Skip-Bo in a grand fashion, thanks to Christine dealing me an insane amount of wild cards. YES! I do have to agree with her, Skip-Bo and winning are definitely good fun. So much fun that we've made a date to do it every week! Hopefully there will be equally as amazing stories to tell each week when we get together, because I've been finding it a little hard to come up with amusing little daily posts.

We should find a name for Wednesdays.
Also a note about the men. One of them kept talking about Duluth. And I kept repeating "Duluth" in the MN accent after him, but then I looked over and saw that it was not a yuppie business man, but instead a sweet looking elderly man. I didn't voice this to Ann, but I felt terrible.
How about "Skip-bo Wednesdays!"?
Also, go Cards!
Doesn't anybody like the Mets?
I am rooting for the Mets, Ben. Partly because they're playing the unlikeable Cards, and partly because they're underdogs too.
Everybody likes the Mets. And EVERYBODY likes the Tigers.
GO CARDS!
I do kinda feel bad for the Cards, what with being the best team in the majors for at least a couple years there and never being able to do anything with it. If they hadn't already won 9 championships and played in more world series than almost every team ever, I might root for them too.
