are tv commercials now doing their part to tear at families? Over the course of watching a movie on tv the other night, I saw a commercial aired several times that made me wonder this. It was for a cell phone, Dad was giving his 2 daughters cell phones, which was really cool. Until he said that he got the family plan, so they could all talk to each other all they wanted....dead silence and "oh my goodness I can't believe you'd expect us to do that..." looks from the girls. Then Mom says "and you can talk to all your friends with the same plan all you want" Mom's the coolest, she gets the thanks and big hugs, Dad is left a step behind, doesn't get in on the hug, everyone rushes out, presumably to use their cool new cell phones, and Dad is left in the living room with a dumb look on his face and he says "call me..." kinda weak-like. Sweet. Way to treat your dad...
I know it's just playing on the stereotype of families and teenagers and stuff, but if people don't expect anything more out of their teens and families, is there ever going to be anything more?
Whether they're true or not, if people watch tv as much as reports say they do (something like 5 hours a night) then people are going to take their understanding of family life and relationships from what they see on television. It would seem to be a case of life imitating art imitating life.
