phone call of the day

I thought all my expectant and new mother friends would appreciate this...

me: "insert name of my company here", this is Ann, how can I help you?

caller (male): um, yes, I'm calling with some questions about disability and FMLA?

me: yes sir, what can I help you with?

caller: I was just looking over my company's policies for maternity and FMLA time, and it looks like I won't be able to get paid for time off for the birth of a child?

me: well, I can't speak specifically to your company's paid benefits, but I can speak regarding the FMLA itself. For the birth of a child you would be able to take FMLA time, but it would be unpaid.

caller: Ok. And for the disability, as a man how would that work for a maternity leave?

me: The disability benefit is for your own health condition, so....for example, you wouldn't be able to take maternity leave under disability.

caller (disbelieving): but a woman can.

me: yes, that includes time off for the delivery and recovery after having a child.

caller (incredulous): but women are routinely discharged from the hospital 2 days after delivery.

me (slightly dumbfounded): yes...but they also are allowed a standard number of weeks after delivery, depending on the type of delivery they have in order to recover from having the baby.

caller: huh. That's interesting. Well, thank you.

me: you're welcome.

This man obviously has never experience the miracle of life with his wife, or anything that follows afterward.
But from the way it sounds, he will soon....
