on Tuesday night, there were some wicked thunderstorms. Wednesday we saw at least 2 really big trees in the neighborhood that were pretty much split in half, my guess is lightning.
that wasn't nearly the most exciting part - I was woken up by my bladder late that night, actually early Wed. morning. I looked at the clock, it was about 3:45. Dragged myself to the bathroom without bothering with lights, and noticed the storm outside. It was a great storm, if I wasn't dead tired I probably would have watched for a little bit. Went back to bed, and noticed that our fan was slowing way, way down, and then stopped. I also noticed how dark it was in the bedroom because the familiar glow of the 2 alarm clocks was no longer there. CRAP. I laid back down, waiting for them to start blinking so I could reset them and get in my last hour or so of sleep. Thing is, they never started blinking.
it's a good thing my husband has a cell phone with 3 alarms on it, so I set 2 of them so I could get up and figured we'd be good from there. I got up a little later, still no power. As I was getting ready for work, it occured to me that we might need to do something with all the food in the fridge that we had purchased 2 evenings before...it's definitely a good thing that Marlon didn't pick up his big cooler that he had brough over for our housewarming party. I shoved what I figured was essential, mostly dairy products, into the cooler along with whatever ice was in our freezer at the time, and called it a morning.
when I got home that afternoon, I was met at the back door by Seth, who had his keys in hand and was planning on visiting as many grocery stores necessary to find ice for our chest freezer and the cooler we had. Still no power. The fun part is that he called the power company to report it, and the recording said they were still trying to assess the problem so they could come up with an estimate of how long it would take to fix. It was quite a storm, apparently!
so the entire evening yesterday was spent getting ice, thankfully we only had to go to one store, and playing games in the dark. There's not much else to do when your lights are out, so we sat in our cool basement and played Monopoly, with a quick run to Perkins for dinner. We can't even cook on our stove because the gas won't light without a spark. I'm kinda scared to just try and light a match and take a chance...
our street was dark last night, as well as down a little ways from us to the right, but looking toward the left just a block the other direction, the stoplight was working, we could see lamps in the windows and the glow of tv screens. Eh, it'd be nice to have lights, but it's kinda fun walking around with our trusty camping lantern and flashlight, doing everything in the dim glow available to us. There's a lot less to do when you can't even turn on a light to see what you're up to, yet we still managed to stay up until 11pm. Dumb Monopoly game...
so we awoke this morning to still no power. We weren't sure at first how I was going to get up - we couldn't get the alarm clocks to work using batteries, Seth needed to be out of the house by 4am to start work, and there was no reason for me to get up that early, and nothing to do in the dark anyways, and we have no phones because there's no power to run them. So we left the front door open and Holly let herself in so she could wake me up and then sit around and wait for me to get ready so we could drive to work together. I'm so thankful that she lives nearby and works with me!!
we're supposed to have friends over tonight to play games and have dinner. We'll still have them over, but it'll be delivery pizza instead of chicken with roasted pepper sauce, and games by lantern light, it should still be pretty fun. Hopefully we'll have power by the weekend but it's still an adventure, so I don't mind so much...yet.
